John Taft
Principal
John is the Senior Project Manager at Backen, Gillam & Kroeger Architects and is currently the Winery Studio Director overseeing operations of the firm's winery projects. During his twelve years with the firm, John has directed and managed a variety of projects from luxury resorts to wineries. He is currently managing the design of Continuum Winery, a premium wine facility in Napa Valley, Left Bank Restaurant, which is currently under construction at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Foggy Bridge Winery, which was once a historic aircraft hangar has been transformed into a 18,000 sq.ft. winery. The new Foggy Bridge Winery will consist of a fermentation area, barrel storage, and hospitality/ restaurant area with a planned capacity of 50,000 cases per year. Cyrus Restaurant, winner of the Michelin Guide's two-star award, is another of John's noteworthy projects. John has extensive knowledge of the wine industry and has directed many of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger's winery projects, including the redesign for Sterling Winery, a 4 year project that consisted of an extensive renovation of the existing facility including the renovation of the 10,000 square foot visitor center with private tasting rooms and exterior seating terraces.
John has more than 20 years of experience in architecture. Prior to joining Backen, Gillam & Kroeger Architects in 1998, he worked on commercial, institutional and residential projects for firms in Los Angeles and San Diego, including several years with Charles Moore. John holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California, and is a licensed architect in the state of California. John is NCARB certified and earned an AIA Merit Award for outstanding CAD design for a Shanghai-based hotel.
